About Sonamarg
Sonamarg, meaning "Meadow of Gold", earned its name from the golden hue of its meadows in summer. Situated at an altitude of 2,800 meters on the banks of the Sindh River, it's one of the most spectacular destinations in Kashmir and the last major town before the Zoji La pass leading to Ladakh.
The meadow is surrounded by glaciers — the Thajiwas Glacier is a major attraction and accessible year-round on ponies or on foot. The landscape is dramatic: snow-capped peaks, alpine meadows bursting with wildflowers, and the silver Sindh River flowing through the valley.
Sonamarg is also the base for high-altitude treks including the Vishansar and Krishansar Lake trek, Gangabal Lake trek, and the ancient Baltal route to Amarnath. Its position on the Srinagar-Leh Highway makes it a popular stopover for travelers heading to Ladakh.
